In 13th AWID international Forum 2016, which was held in Brazilian city Salvador, near to Atlantic Ocean, there were 9 participants from Armenia. This was a good opportunity to represent our country, to introduce the processes and activities of organizations and initiatives. During these four days there were not only feminists and women's rights advocates gathered on one platform sharing their vast experience, but also a number of allies from different social groups and initiatives. The forum brought together various participants, there we got opportunity to share our differences, diversity, being together and celebrating the victory of our existence. To celebrate the success of our existence, the growth and the heights we have reached and in spite of the most difficult challenges we faced, we still continue to stay true to this long "journey". AWID 2016 Forum was also a good opportunity to learn about yourself, the world around you, to understand the violence and inequality of complex and polarized word, the solutions to this encountered problems. The plenary meetings, sessions and art collective events gave you great energy and help to identify, establish contacts with various activists around the world and opportunity to learn about people whose experience is different from the experience in your culture. Each course and event, which was launched during the Forum, was very unique and important. As an activist who tries to show her activism through the arts, I was very impressed and interested in the seminar-workshop held by The Fearless art collective. During this workshop the participants had to build a feministic village where the only dominant thing would be the love, love formed non-profit organizations which would contribute the constructive progress of public interests and people. The experience I got from The Forum inspired me much and create an opportunity to think and act differently, seek creative solutions to the problems arising out of the measures and approaches, to share all information with friends and relatives. We, the representatives of “Women in Black”, Armenia peacebuilding NGO, express our deep concern to the violence committed by the Armenian Police against civilians and protesters: riot police clashed late on Friday with hundreds of people near a police compound in Yerevan occupied by gunmen affiliated with an Armenian opposition group. On July 17 in the morning the occupation of Grand Patrol Service station by “Sasna Tsrer” group was followed by persecutions of peaceful civilians by police officers in the streets.During these days the police, without providing reasonable suspicion, restricted the exercise of freedom of movement, rights to peaceful assembly of citizens, rights to freedom of expression. At around 10:30 pm Friday, police in Armenia fired tear gas and stun grenades at hundreds of demonstrators gathered on the cordoned off section of the Khorenatsi street and in the adjacent Sari Tagh neighborhood in support of the “Sasna Tsrer” armed group. Armenia’s Health Ministry reports that almost 70 people have been hospitalized with different types of injuries including a lot of people with broken a rms and legs, and also a young man named Sayat with a seemingly severe damage to his eye. It subsequently became known that the 16-year-old has lost his eye. Also several underage children (from 2 months to 7 year) have been hospitalized. We, the representatives of “Women in Black”, Armenia peacebuilding NGO, called to fight against militarism, violence, injustice, conflict and war, are deeply concerned about the increased violent activities committed by the Armenian Police.
Official Statement of The Armenian Initiative of the “Women in Black” International Movement10/23/2016 We, the representatives of The Armenian Initiative of the “Women in Black” International Peace Movement, express our deep concern with regard to the tension and violence along the entire length of the contact line of Nagorno Karabakh- Azerbaijan and war calls among the Armenian and Azerbaijani societies as a result of carrying out rocket and artillery strikes not only on the Armenian military units, but also on civilian settlements.
On April 2, the violation of the ceasefire along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border led to civilian casualties, a 12-year old child was killed and 2 people were wounded. The Armenian side took retaliatory actions . resulting in bilateral losses, continuous and depressing. We, the representatives of the Armenian Initiative of “Women In Black” International Movement, called to fight against militarism, violence, conflict and war, are deeply concerned about the increased military activities, the high level of incidents bringing about the death of people on the contact line. Our Urgent Call is addressed to the governments of both countries to stop violence and war, doing everything possible to find a non-violent solution leading to a lasting peace. We want to call to both societies to stop bilateral hate speeches avoiding from spreading aggression. Three representatives of “Women in Black”, Armenian Initiative Arusik, Rimma and Anush had a chance to participate in the WIB International gathering, which took place in Bangalore, India from November 15 to 19, 2015. The Armenian delegation upheld sessions on the impact of war on women in the region, as well as on the WIB Armenia movement itself during the international meeting. They also took part in the World Court of Women Against War, For Peace, which aimed at giving voices to women from all parts of the world by providing testimonies to the Court. WIB Armenia members brought their testimony to the Court, speaking of the effects of war and conflict in our country, in the language of suffusing and on behalf of all women affected by it. This was a huge experience for the Armenian delegation, because they made a lot of acquaintances with a lot of activists there, who are like living legends in the sphere of feminism. So this was a huge source of inspiration, experience and knowledge for the Armenian delegation and then also for the members ofthe whole group of “Women in Black”, Armenian Initiative, who were updated about all the details of the conference when the girls returned from India. And it’s important to mention the fact that Armenian delegation also participated in the vigil of the “Women in Black” International Peace Movement against War. We were delighted to find the pictures of vigil participants from Armenia appeared in the prominent Indian media agency. Arusik Ohanyan “Women in Black”, Armenian Initiative Series of Trainings Devoted to Conflict Resolution Through Non-violent Struggle for Young Leaders10/23/2016 Taking into consideration the fact that Armenia is in the unresolved regional conflict and highlighting the peaceful methods of conflict resolution as well as the involvement of young women and girls in it, the members of “Women in Black” Armenian Initiative of the international movement organized and implemented several courses devoted to this issue. The courses are preceded by preliminary activities, during which the young members of the initiative got the necessary knowledge and skills from the experienced trainers for the implementation of their idea of courses. “Conflict resolution: the role of women in peace-building processes” training course was launched in the capital city Yerevan on October 26th in high school №148 named after Mushegh Galshoyan for the pupils of 11th grade, accompanied by active discussions and debates. The second training was held in Kurtan village of Lori region on March 4; then the third one in Aygavan village of Ararat region on March 17 for the pupils of 11th-12th grades. The course was divided into two parts, where the theoretical part were followed by the practical exercises, during which participants had the opportunity to express and discuss a number of issues. The second part of the training was the discussion part mostly devoted to women’s involvement in peaceful conflict resolution, during which participants were introduced to the history of the international movement of “Women in Black”. According the reviews and comments by participants, the courses were interesting and important. Most of them expressed their willingness to participate in such trainings, some of them express their willingness to volunteer for the initiative and cooperate in the future. As a result of the trainings, a network of active youth from different regions of Armenia was formed, and we hope it will bring us to the new stages of peaceful conflict resolution with its knowledge and innovative approaches in the future. Lusine Kosakyan “Women in Black”, Armenian Initiative In December 3, 2015 the members of “Women in Black”, Armenian initiative, together with “Society Without Violence” NGO as an annual tradition organised “Women, unite for peace” public event which was accompanied by a peacebuilding dance flash mob. The event took place in the central corpus of Yerevan State University. Despite the cold and snowy weather members of the initiative danced the flash mob several times which was inspiring and by that inspiration they shared the peacebuilding ideology. By that way members expressed their endurance to overcome the difficulties while distributing the ideology. By the way the event was held in the frames of 16-Days of Activism to stop gender based violence. As always a list of issues were highlighted during the event: the importance of women’s involvement in decision-making processes, women’s participation in peacebuilding formal and informal negotiations, as well as in the processes of creating mechanisms for conflict transformation. For that purpose there were informative booklets, leaflets, postcards highlighted with the peacebuilding essence of the initiative and they were given to the passers-by, students and other interested people. There were also posters presenting the strategies to overcome conflicts. One of the members of “Women in Black”, Armenian initiative, Arusik said in one of her interviews: “Flash mobs are active and inspiring way to spread and express your ideology. So we danced, got inspired and involved others also. We shared our peace ideology with people. We tried to show the importance of women’s involvement in peacebuilding and conflict resolution processes and the need of awareness raising”. It’s important to mention also the fact that some of the dancers were not the members and supporters of “Women in Black”, Armenian initiative but girls who were interested in the ideology and the event. On September 24, as a result of the violation of the ceasefire along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, 3 women were killed and many were wounded among civilians in the Armenian border region Tavush. On the evening of the 25th of September the ongoing wave of firing included the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh and 4 young soldiers, aged 18-20, were killed, and 16 injured. The counter-actions by Armenian side were not delayed resulting in bilateral losses, continuous and depressing. On both sides, mass media and social platforms are flooded by the sad news about violation of the cease-fire between Armenia and Azerbaijan; hate speech prevails without even one call for peace. The above-mentioned calls worsen the situation which is already tense, without promoting the appeasement of war situation and the conflict resolution. We, the representatives of the Armenian Initiative of Women In Black International Movement, called to struggle against militarism, violence, conflict and war, seeking to reach worldwide peace, are deeply concerned with the deterioration of the situation as a result of the ongoing hate speech and call to both societies to stop bilateral hate speeches, thus avoiding from worsening the already tense situation. 5.10.2015 |
